The Ukrainian government is counting on Japan's support in the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Ukraine has reached an agreement with Japan to assist in the restoration of the damaged Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Financial and technical assistance will be provided through UNESCO mechanisms, according to “Apostrophe.”

During an official visit to Tokyo on July 1, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga held talks with his Japanese counterpart, Toshimitsu Motegi. The main topics of discussion were the current situation on the front lines, the consequences of Russian attacks on cultural heritage sites, and prospects for bilateral cooperation. Andriy Sibiga specifically highlighted the extent of the damage inflicted on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as a result of the shelling.

In response to a request from Kyiv, the Japanese foreign minister expressed his willingness to support the restoration efforts. In addition to issues related to the preservation of cultural heritage, the parties discussed the development of unmanned technologies and signed an agreement to implement a scholarship program worth $500,000. This initiative, part of the JDS program, aims to train personnel for effective public administration and the country’s subsequent postwar reconstruction. It is worth noting that the Greek Ministry of Culture had previously joined in funding restoration work at the Lavra.
