Ukraine and Greece Discussed the Restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Tetyana Berezhnaya, Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture of Ukraine, held online talks with Pantelis Alexandros Dimitrakopoulos, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic. The main topics of the meeting were further cooperation in the field of cultural heritage preservation and practical support for the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which was damaged as a result of the Russian attack on June 15.

According to the official website of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the parties discussed the steps already taken to save the monument. Tetyana Berezhna noted that emergency repair work on the Lavra’s grounds has been fully completed. At this time, specialists are beginning the conservation phase, which will be followed by the preparation of scientific and design documentation necessary for a full-scale restoration.

First Deputy Minister Ivan Verbitsky added that international experts have been involved in the damage assessment process. In particular, UNESCO provided advisory support and conducted an initial 3D scan of the site, which is critical for the accuracy of future restoration work. The Greek ambassador, in turn, confirmed his country’s readiness to provide systematic support to Ukraine, including through contributions to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund, and expressed a willingness to consider the possibility of direct financial participation in the reconstruction of the Lavra.

As a reminder, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had reached an agreement with the Swiss Confederation on financing restoration work at the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which had previously been damaged as a result of a drone attack.
