A fire broke out at a Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Chernivtsi region

An incident occurred in the village of Toporovtsy in the Chernivtsi region, during which the dome of a Ukrainian Orthodox Church caught fire. The fire was quickly contained thanks to the timely response of emergency responders, who prevented extensive damage to the church building.

According to , the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Chernivtsi region reported that the incident occurred on July 23, 2026, during renovation work. According to the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in the Chernivtsi region, the fire was caused by a violation of fire safety regulations while using power tools for cutting.

Eyewitnesses who noticed flames near the dome promptly called emergency services. Thanks to the firefighters’ professional response, the fire was quickly extinguished; however, the church’s roof sustained partial damage. The agency emphasized that it was precisely negligence in handling construction equipment that led to the emergency.

As a reminder, it was previously reported that the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra could take about two years, and the preliminary estimate of the damage already exceeds 500 million UAH. The administration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve announced the completion of the main work to address the aftermath of the fire and prepare the building for further conservation.
