"There's nowhere else to go": The Ministry of Culture organized a "high art" festival in Sofia, Kyiv

From August 13 to 16, the National Reserve “Sofia of Kyiv” will host the ninth annual Bouquet Kyiv Stage festival of fine arts, whose main theme this year will be the slogan “Armed with Beauty.” According to , the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine reports that the event’s program will combine music, visual arts, film, theater, and educational initiatives, offering guests more than 50 events over four days.

The central visual highlight will be a multimedia exhibition of works by monumentalist Alexander Dubovik, timed to coincide with the artist’s 95th birthday. In addition, the “Liberated Music” project will focus on the decolonization of the Ukrainian music scene. Special attention will be given to tributes honoring friends of the festival, including a concert in memory of Nazgul Shukaeva, an exhibition by Yulia Lazarevskaya, and a photo exhibition by Oleg Pavlyuchenkov.

The festival’s musical program will feature a wide range of genres, from classical to ethnic music. Well-known ensembles will take part in the performances, such as the “Kyiv” Chamber Choir, the National Presidential Orchestra conducted by Tetyana Kalinichenko, and the “Kyiv Camerata” ensemble. The international program includes artists from Norway, Germany, Poland, Israel, Bulgaria, and Georgia. Guests can also look forward to screenings of Ukrainian films as part of the “KinoBouquet” program.

As a reminder, we previously reported that another secular event took place at the Spassky Cathedral in Chernihiv—a church previously seized from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church—which drew sharp criticism from believers. Instead of the traditional memorial service for the deceased medical workers, the authorities organized a concert in the cathedral, accompanied by musicians playing guitars right at the altar.
