Uman welcomed more than 50,000 pilgrims for the Rosh Hashanah celebration

Uman has become a center for mass pilgrimage: more than 50,000 Hasidim have arrived in the city to celebrate the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.

According to , Israeli police spokesperson Michael Zingerman reported that the festivities are proceeding without any serious incidents. Despite isolated incidents, including the seizure of prohibited substances, the situation in the city remains under control. “Most of the visitors came from Israel, but pilgrims also arrived from the U.S., Canada, and European countries,” the report notes.

Uman has traditionally been a key destination for the Bratslav Hasidim, as it is home to the grave of the movement’s founder, Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav. According to the Jewish calendar, Rosh Hashanah is celebrated this year from September 11 to 13, marking the beginning of the year 5787. In addition to visiting synagogues, believers participate in the collective Tikun HaKlali prayer.

As a reminder, it was previously reported that the traditional annual religious procession, which was scheduled to begin on August 19 from the Holy Trinity Brailov Women’s Monastery to the Dormition Pochaiv Lavra, will not take place this year. The decision to cancel was made due to the state of martial law and a corresponding order from the Vinnytsia Regional Administration.
