The prosecutor handling the case of Metropolitan Theodosius has been dismissed amid an anti-corruption investigation

Personnel changes have taken place at the regional prosecutor’s office in Cherkasy, affecting the high-profile case involving Metropolitan Feodosy of Cherkasy and Kaniv (UOC). Maksym Shtompel, deputy head of the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, was dismissed from his position amid a large-scale anti-corruption investigation.

Maksym Shtompel played a key role in the prosecution of the UOC hierarch from the very beginning of the proceedings. He personally participated in the initial searches of the metropolitan’s residence, served him with a notice of suspicion, and conducted interrogations while leading the prosecution team in this case. The official’s dismissal, which took place on September 8, 2026, is linked to materials made public by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) as part of the special operation “Carthage.”

According to the information obtained, the prosecutor’s name appears in records concerning the circumstances of his appointment to the position, which mention regular illegal payments of $1,000 per month. Thus, a law enforcement official who had been actively involved in the prosecution of Metropolitan Theodosius since 2023 has himself become a central figure in a corruption scandal.

It is worth noting that the court hearings in the bishop’s case have been ongoing for quite some time, and the pretrial restrictions imposed on the hierarch are regularly extended every two months. At present, the status and further developments in the criminal proceedings remain under close public scrutiny.
