The Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is scheduled to be restored within two years

The Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which was damaged as a result of the shelling of Kyiv by Russian forces, is being prepared for extensive conservation work and subsequent restoration. According to estimates by the reserve’s administration, the full restoration of this historic site will take about two years, after which the cathedral will once again be open to worshippers and visitors.

Maksym Ostapenko, Director General of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve , noted that following the incident on June 15, the building sustained serious damage: about 80% of the roof was burned away, and the domes and exterior structural elements were damaged. In addition, a significant amount of water entered the cathedral during firefighting efforts, which damaged the frescoes. Experts from the Institute of Building Structures determined that approximately 40% of the metal frames need to be replaced.

At this time, the bidding process has been completed, and work to preserve the building will begin shortly, which will protect the cathedral from the effects of the weather. The Lviv-based “Polytechnika” Institute has already prepared a damage assessment report for the restoration work. Funding for the restoration is being provided with the support of the Swiss government, which has allocated 600,000 Swiss francs through UNESCO mechanisms. DTEK restored power to the site.

As a reminder, the administration of the “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” National Reserve reported extensive damage to the Cathedral of the Dormition. According to estimates by the reserve’s director, Maksym Ostapenko, the full restoration of the monastery’s main church will require approximately 15 million euros. Part of the funding for urgent emergency repairs has already been allocated from the state’s reserve fund, and the Swiss government has provided a grant of 700,000 euros to prepare the design and cost estimate documentation.
