The European Parliament discussed the role of Christian values in modern Europe

A discussion was held at the European Parliament on the significance of Christian values in the context of Article 17 of the Treaty of Lisbon. The event, held on September 30, 2026, served as a platform for dialogue on Europe’s spiritual and cultural heritage, as well as on the future coexistence of various religious and secular traditions on the continent.
According to Orthodoxia News Agency, the meeting was organized by MEP Dimitrios Tsiodras in collaboration with the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy and the European Parliament’s Intergroup on Freedom of Religion or Belief. During the meeting, representatives of various faiths and politicians emphasized that Christianity is not merely a historical fact, but a fundamental foundation for the formation of European society, fostering a spirit of solidarity and mutual respect.
In an official greeting on behalf of the Committee of Representatives of Orthodox Churches to the EU (CROCEU), it was noted that Christian principles are meant to inspire the European community to engage in open dialogue, while preventing discrimination. Bishop Apostolos of Tanagra, director of the Greek Orthodox Church’s delegation to the EU, emphasized in his remarks the importance of respecting religious freedoms and the rights of the state, calling for a harmonious balance between Europe’s historical identity and the challenges of the modern world.
The event was also attended by European Parliament Vice President Antonella Sberna, European Parliament members Evangelos Meimarakis and Miriam Lexmann, Maximos Charakopoulos, Secretary General of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, as well as leaders of Catholic and ecumenical organizations such as COMECE and the Council of European Churches. The participants agreed that constructive dialogue between the Church and the institutions of the European Union remains a critically important tool for maintaining peace and social stability.
