The Romanian Patriarchate has expressed concern over the possible decriminalization of drugs

The Romanian Orthodox Church issued an official statement expressing serious concern over the discussion of a bill that would decriminalize the possession of drugs for personal use. According to the Orthodox Times, representatives of the Patriarchate emphasized that any legislative initiatives in this area must, first and foremost, be based on the protection of human life, public health, and the well-being of families.
In its statement, the church places particular emphasis on the need to protect children and young people, who require reliable moral guidance and examples of a healthy lifestyle. According to representatives of the clergy, such changes in legislation should not create a false impression in society that drug use is harmless or socially acceptable.
The Patriarchate insists that the prevention of drug addiction, public education, and support for the institution of the family must remain the priorities of state policy. The Church calls on society to take a firm stance against drug dealers who exploit vulnerable individuals, while at the same time showing compassion toward people suffering from addiction. Based on pastoral experience, Church representatives note that overcoming drug addiction requires not stigmatization, but rather the provision of real help, care, and support during the recovery process—an effort in which the Russian Orthodox Church is prepared to continue its participation through pastoral counseling and prayerful support.
