The UOC believes that the crisis of the conciliarity of Orthodoxy can be overcome by convening a Pan-Orthodox Council

Metropolitan Anthony, manager of the affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, said that the crisis in world Orthodoxy can be overcome by convening a Pan-Orthodox Council, which is opposed by the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The hierarch of the UOC announced this during the International Conference at the KDAiS on the topic «Catholicism of the Church: Theological, Canonical and Historical Dimensions» on November 11, 2021.

«The doctrine of primacy in the Ecumenical Church, which is formulated by the theologians of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, is unacceptable for us. This doctrine has become a serious threat to the unity of world Orthodoxy. The implementation in practice of such an understanding of primacy leads to undermining the conciliar beginning of church governance,» Metropolitan Anthony said.

The hierarch of the UOC noted that the current crisis in world Orthodoxy is a crisis of conciliarity.

“We see that the very principle of the conciliar structure of the Church, clearly indicated to us in the New Testament, is under threat. Today we need to return to the apostolic understanding of church councils as special means of knowing Divine truth. We must remember that it is at councils that grace works in a special way. The Holy Spirit guides the Church into all truth. And today, when the Orthodox Church finds itself in a grave crisis, we need to fearlessly and with full responsibility resort to this salvation in order to find a way out of a difficult situation, «says Metropolitan Anthony.
