Moldovan President refutes statements about the government's intention to ban the Orthodox Church of Moldova

President of Moldova Maia Sandu has refuted a statement by an MP from the ruling Action and Solidarity Party, which supports her, Vasile Shoimaru, that the authorities intend to close the Orthodox Church of Moldova (OCM), which is a self-governing part of the Russian Orthodox Church, following the example of Ukraine. Sandu’s statement was reported by the TASS news agency.

“There is no danger either for the Metropolitan Church of Moldova or for the Metropolitan Church of Bessarabia. On the contrary, during these four years we have done more than anyone to promote peace and mutual understanding between these metropolises. We have good relations with both. The statements of the deputy have nothing to do with reality,” — said Sandu in an appeal on Facebook.

We shall remind you that earlier we reported that the Moldovan government plans to ban the Orthodox Church of Moldova (as part of the Moscow Patriarchate) by adopting, following the example of Ukraine, the relevant law. The adoption of such a decision is scheduled for the fall of 2024. This was announced by Vasile Shoimaru, an MP of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party.
