UOC believers did not let the Ministry of Culture commission into the Dormition Cathedral in Kanev

The rector and parishioners of the ancient Holy Dormition (St. George) Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kaniv did not allow a commission of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine to enter the church to conduct an inventory of the property. According to members of the religious community, the Ministry of Culture did not include representatives of the UOC in the commission, which is why this issue arose. This was reported by Suspilne.Cherkasy.

“We came to bare walls. There was not even a normal floor. We have done everything to make this cathedral a decoration not only of our city but also of the entire Orthodox world. We will also comply with the court decision. But we want it to be civilized. We will do so so that we are not ashamed to look each other in the eye,” — said the rector of the church.

For their part, representatives of the Ministry of Culture called on the religious community not to obstruct the implementation of the court decision to transfer the Holy Dormition Cathedral to state ownership. One of the commission members added that the church will be turned into a museum.

“First, a very powerful, interesting exposition will have to be made here. First of all, we need to give visitors access to this history. So that they can come to the temple, because until now our guides have not had such access. They could only conduct a tour near the temple itself. No one allowed them inside. And, of course, directly, since this is a church-the Shevchenko National Reserve, having regulated all the documents, will be able to rent it for a few hours, for example, for the performance of some religious services. But this will be done directly through a tender through the State Property Fund, of course,” — the commission said.

It should be noted that on August 10, 2024, a meeting of the territorial community was held in Kaniv, Cherkasy region, to decide the fate of the future confessional affiliation of the local ancient Holy Dormition Cathedral to the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. By a roll call vote, the church was “transferred” to the OCU.
