Land plot under Dormition Cathedral in Kaniv seized from UOC

The state has completed the procedure of expropriation of the Holy Dormition (St. George) Cathedral of the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the city of Kaniv, Cherkasy region. After the actual expulsion of the UOC religious community from the church and the transfer of the cathedral to state ownership, the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office secured a court decision to deprive the religious community of the right to ownership of the land on which the religious building is located. This is reported by the website of the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

“In order to fully restore the interests of the state, the prosecutor’s office also took measures to return from the permanent use of the UOC the land plot of historical and cultural designation on which the Assumption Cathedral is located and which was illegally changed to public land without the consent of the relevant cultural heritage protection authorities. At present, pursuant to the court decision, the state act for the right of permanent use of the land of the Kyiv Metropolis of the UOC and the state registration of the land plot with an illegal designation in the State Land Cadastre have been canceled,” — the prosecutor’s office said in a release.

Earlier, we reported that representatives of the Shevchenko National Reserve told how they will use the Holy Dormition (St. George) Cathedral of the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kaniv, which was recently taken away from the local religious community of the UOC. According to the officials, the cathedral will first be restored, after which excursions will be held in the church and, possibly, religious events will be resumed, which will be held by representatives of the OCU.
