The government has allowed yet another historic church in the Poltava region to fall into disrepair

The Church of the Nativity of Christ in the village of Verguny, Poltava Oblast—built in 1801 and designated as an architectural monument of national significance—is in a state of disrepair. The issue was highlighted by blogger Sofia Bezverkha, who published video footage clearly demonstrating the deterioration of this historic site. This was reported by , the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
According to the blogger’s reports, while this unique building continues to deteriorate rapidly, representatives of the Ministry of Culture are failing to take the necessary initiative to preserve it. The situation surrounding the church in Verguny has sparked public outcry, as it highlights a stark contrast: while historical monuments in need of state support are falling into disrepair, officials are focusing their attention on sites that were previously restored by religious communities.
The article also notes that, with regard to restored churches, the authorities often take steps to terminate usage agreements. ““The shameful consequences of this ‘upheaval’ have been the termination of agreements and the subsequent use of sacred sites for entertainment events—concerts and shows—which is completely incompatible with the sacred purpose of these spaces,” the source emphasizes, citing . This incident served as yet another confirmation of a systemic problem: the dismissive attitude of government agencies toward the preservation of the country’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
It should be noted that in Ukraine , public concern continues to grow over the deplorable condition and destruction of numerous historic religious structures, whose fate remains neglected by the Ministry of Culture. Particular outrage is caused by the situation in which the ministry, while ignoring the problem, uses accusations of improper preservation of monuments as a pretext for terminating agreements with parishes of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
