Metropolitan Theodosius: There is complete legal anarchy and lawlessness in the country in relation to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Theodosius of Cherkasy and Kaniv, commented on the situation with the aggression against the UOC in Cherkasy region and in the country as a whole. The Metropolitan called the seizure of UOC churches “legal anarchy,” emphasizing that no one is responsible for the beatings of priests and people that occur during raider attacks. He said this in an interview with the Suspilne TV channel, the press service of the Cherkasy Eparchy of the UOC reports.

«The country is now experiencing complete legal anarchy and lawlessness in relation to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It is no exaggeration to say that there are all signs of genocide on religious grounds against the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The cathedral in Cherkasy was seized illegally. Because the cathedral is property, it is a real estate object, and it belongs to the Cherkasy diocesan administration. It is a legal entity. And the land plot under the cathedral is also in the permanent use of the Cherkasy diocesan administration. There is a state act for the land,» — said Metropolitan Theodosius.

The hierarch added that none of those who beat the priests and believers of the UOC in Cherkasy during the seizure of St. Michael’s Cathedral has been punished.

«Everyone saw what was happening: people were beaten on the head, our priest’s teeth were knocked out, arms were broken, legs were broken. Has any of those bandits been brought to justice, is any of them in jail or under house arrest? No,» — the hierarch added.

It was earlier reported that on March 28, 2025, hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Cherkasy and Kaniv Theodosius , participated in the 58th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council. The archbishop spoke about the violations of the rights of UOC believers and the forceful seizure of the Archangel Michael Cathedral of the UOC in Cherkasy, during which he personally, as well as members of the diocesan clergy and believers, suffered.
