SSU Conducted a Search at Metropolitan Antoniy's Office on Suspicion of "Violation of Legislation"

On April 15, 2025, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted a search at the office of Metropolitan Antoniy (Pakanich), the head of affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. These searches are part of an investigation concerning “hindering the activities of religious communities, particularly their re-subordination.” This was reported by “Ukrainian Orthodox” and other sources.

Among the new suspicions raised during the investigation are “alleged abuse of office by Metropolitan Antoniy and misleading of the faithful.” These accusations complement the already existing cases related to “hindering the lawful changes of subordination of religious communities.”

It is worth noting that Ukrainian religious scholar Hennadiy Khrystokin believes that the OCU and the UOC are not ready for dialogue. Among the reasons he listed, he pointed out the conflictual nature of their relationship. Khrystokin confirmed that the OCU, taking advantage of the moment, is expanding at the expense of UOC parishes and, having received a “trust credit” from the authorities and society, is effectively taking revenge on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for past grievances.
