Cyprus Church Launches Support Program for Large Families

The Archdiocese of Cyprus has announced the launch of a new social program aimed at supporting families with three or more children. The initiative is intended as the Church’s contribution to addressing the demographic crisis faced by the country. This was reported by Philenews.

Currently, the birth rate in Cyprus stands at only 1.4%, while a rate of 2.1% is needed to maintain the natural population replacement. The problem was officially acknowledged by President Nikos Christodoulides, who, during the celebration of Mothers with Many Children on May 11, promised to introduce a comprehensive set of state measures. The Church is joining these efforts. Archbishop Georgios, concerned about the demographic situation, is initiating a long-term program of material support for large families.

To receive assistance, families must meet three criteria: at least one parent must be a Cypriot citizen, one parent must be Orthodox, and the child receiving support must be baptized. The amount of aid will be determined individually depending on the specific needs of each family.

It was also previously reported that in his Easter message this year, Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus once again drew attention to the ongoing Turkish occupation of part of the island, which has lasted for over 50 years. He emphasized that despite numerous sufferings and difficulties, the Greek people of Cyprus do not lose faith because the Resurrection of Christ is a symbol of the victory of life over death and justice over evil.
