“Independence and Development of the Orthodox Church”: Putin reiterates the importance of resolving the Ukrainian church crisis on the path to peace

Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again made it clear that the Ukrainian church issue will be one of the topics of future peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. He noted that “the independence and dignified conditions of the Orthodox Church” should also form the basis for long-term peace between the two countries. Putin made this statement on August 1, 2025, during a visit to Valaam, according to the official website of the Russian president.

“And the humanitarian issue is the Russian language, it is the independence and decent conditions for the development of the Orthodox Church, the Christian Church in Ukraine. All this together must be discussed and must form the basis of long-term, lasting peace, without any temporary restrictions,” — Putin said.

As a reminder, we recently published an analytical material on what the post-war future of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church might look like. The author of the publication pointed out that Russia, during peace negotiations, will definitely demand to ease pressure on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which, in turn, will leave the UOC under the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church.
