The abbot of the Sinai monastery will resign on September 12

Archbishop Damian, abbot of the Sinai Monastery, who recently left Egypt for Greece, announced that he will officially resign on September 12. At the same time, elections for the new abbot of the monastery in Sinai are scheduled for September 14, 2025. This was reported by The Orthodox Times.
Archbishop Damian emphasized that his decision was dictated by the desire for unity among the Sinai brotherhood and to ensure the future of the monastery. “Guided by the unity of the Holy Sinai Brotherhood and the canonical election of the new abbot and archbishop of Sinai, I am taking the following steps,” – he said, announcing the convening of the General Assembly of the monastery fathers on Sunday, September 14, with the sole item on the agenda being the election of a new abbot and archbishop.
Recall that the abbot of the Sinai Monastery in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, Archbishop Damian of Sinai, published a statement in response to the call of the Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilus to the next meeting of the Synod of the Church. Archbishop Damian blamed Russia, the Moscow Patriarchate, and Patriarch Theophilos for the crisis, stating that he would not seek to overthrow the Primate of the Jerusalem Patriarchate, but would transfer his powers to a new abbot to be elected by the monastery’s brethren.
