In Lviv region authorities refused to allow the OCU to install a monument to the Russian Orthodox Church Metropolitan

In the town of Sambor, Lviv Oblast, a conflict has arisen between the local authorities and the OCU over plans to erect a monument to St. Paul Konyushkevich, Metropolitan of Tobolsk and All Siberia of the 18th century Russian Orthodox Church. Despite the lack of official authorization, preparatory work for the monument’s installation is reportedly already underway.

According to Leopolis.news, several months ago, the rector of the local OCU community appealed to the city authorities with a request to allow the construction of the monument on St. Paul’s Square. In response, the executive committee of the city council demanded a justification of the expediency of the monument, supported by the conclusion of the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of the Lviv Regional State Administration. To date, these documents have not been provided.

Nevertheless, according to the source, “preparatory work for the opening of the monument to the builder of the ROC under the canopy is actively continuing”. It is noted that among some clergymen of the OCU there is an opinion that in the west of Ukraine preference is given to the installation of monuments associated with Uniatism.
