Europe's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary was unveiled in Poland

A grand unveiling ceremony was held in the Polish village of Konotop for a monumental statue of the Virgin Mary, which has been officially recognized as the tallest concrete statue of the Virgin Mary in Europe. The structure stands 55.6 meters tall, making it taller than the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, according to the BBC.
The consecration ceremony, conducted by local Catholic Bishop Krzysztof Wentkowski, was timed to coincide with the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The event was accompanied by an unusual spectacle: helicopters circling above the site showered the faithful with rose petals. The monument, depicting the Virgin Mary wearing a large crown with her arms outstretched, was erected in the middle of a field using private donations from a local family of millionaires.
In his speech, Bishop Krzysztof Wentkowski emphasized the spiritual significance of the new monument, noting that it is intended to remind people today of the need to “lift their gaze upward, toward God and Heaven.” Although the Polish statue is smaller than the world’s tallest—the 98-meter-tall statue of the Virgin Mary in the Philippines—it has become a significant religious symbol for Poland.
The country’s first president, Lech Wałęsa, attended the unveiling. The politician, known for his devotion to the Catholic faith, emphasized the significance of this event in his life, stating: “ ‘I began with the Virgin Mary and I end with the Virgin Mary.’” It is worth noting that the event took place against the backdrop of a decline in the Catholic Church’s influence on the lives of urban youth in Poland.
As a reminder, thousands of Orthodox believers from Poland, Estonia, and other countries gathered on August 9–10 in Supraśl to venerate the Supraśl Icon of the Mother of God “Odigitria.” The pilgrims made their way to the monastery on foot from Białystok and by kayak down the river from Gródek.
