UOC lawyer Robert Amsterdam criticized the law against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the British media

Robert Amsterdam, a well-known lawyer of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), expressed serious concern and criticized the Ukrainian law, which, according to him, is aimed at destroying the UOC, on the air of the British TV channel GB News. The human rights activist called the actions of the Ukrainian authorities a persecution of the Church and emphasized the lack of legal grounds for this.

In a televised appearance on The Camilla Tominey Show, Robert Amsterdam emphasized in his speech that one of the serious problems for Christians around the world is the policy of the European Union and the United States, which, in his opinion, at a certain point decided to actively interfere in religious affairs. He called the situation in Ukraine one of the «catastrophic consequences» of such a policy.

According to Amsterdam, the Ukrainian authorities have adopted a law that he considers aimed at destroying the Church. He categorically stated that there is «no basis for such a law either in the Ukrainian Constitution or in international law.» As a confirmation of international concern, the human rights activist noted that this law has already been condemned by Pope Francis and the Anglican Church.

The lawyer also touched on the topic of possible Russian influences, noting that if there was any structure in Ukraine that could have been «captured by Russia,» it was, in his words, the «secret police,» which «almost collapsed after the invasion of 2022,» referring to the SBU.

As a reminder, we reported earlier that the head of the Archdiocese of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the United States, Archbishop Elpidophoros, reiterated his concern about Ukrainian Law No. 3894, saying that it poses a threat to the religious freedom of millions of believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This position was voiced in the context of a meeting of Orthodox Christians with U.S. lawmakers in Washington, DC.
