Archbishop George of Cyprus: The election of the Metropolitan of Paphos will take place in 3-4 months under the new statute

Archbishop George of Cyprus has announced that the election of a new metropolitan of Paphos is expected within three to four months. According to Romfea.gr, the head of the Church of Cyprus emphasized that the new Statute will greatly simplify and clean up the election procedure, excluding the participation of laymen.
According to the First Hierarch, the new Statute will be finalized in the next 3-4 months. “In a very short period of time, I expect 3-4 months, the new Statute will be ready and new elections will be held on its basis,” the publication quoted Archbishop George as saying. After the approval of the new Statute, the Holy Synod will immediately meet to elect a new Metropolitan of Paphos.
Archbishop George emphasized that the upcoming procedure “will have nothing to do with the previous ones”. The purpose of these changes is to avoid tensions and confrontations that in the past have led to disagreements and schisms, including among the clergy. Thus, the new order is aimed at ensuring a more peaceful and consolidated process of electing the Church hierarch.
Recall, earlier we reported that the suspended Metropolitan Tihik announced his intention to appeal to the civil courts of the Republic of Cyprus in January 2026. His goal is to seek reinstatement as ruling bishop of the Paphos Metropolis, as he considers the decisions taken against him to be unlawful.
