European Commission officially authorizes funding of abortion from EU social funds

The European Commission has announced a significant decision allowing Member States to use European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) funds to finance access to abortion. The decision, adopted on February 26, 2026, has sparked intense debate because it effectively integrates support for abortion into the EU’s equality and social support programs.

As reported by the European Conservative, the European Commission has confirmed the possibility of directing EUF+ funds to programs that ensure «safe and legal abortion.» It is important to note that no new laws or separate funds will be created for this purpose; it is proposed to use existing financial instruments.

The European Commission emphasized that the decision is voluntary for member states and does not override their national health mandates. Nevertheless, it actually means the inclusion of abortion services in the framework of pan-European social support and equality programs.

The European Social Fund Plus is one of the EU’s largest financial instruments, amounting to an impressive 142.7 billion euros. The decision has already provoked widespread debate, especially given that earlier initiatives aimed at limiting the funding of abortion in Brussels, did not find support.

Recall, in Paris, security forces suppressed a peaceful protest against the legalization of euthanasia, which was held in front of the National Assembly. Dozens of activists were detained. The action took place against the background of consideration of a controversial bill establishing the «right to euthanasia», which was adopted the next day.
