ROCOR Hierarch calls for peace and prayer during Lent amid escalation in the Middle East

Metropolitan Nicholas (Olkhovsky), the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), has issued an appeal to the faithful to focus on peace, prayer and repentance during the period of Lent. He emphasized that this time of salvation is meant for spiritual reflection, not conflict, especially in light of heightened tensions in Iran and the Middle East.
According to the Union of Orthodox Journalists of America, Metropolitan Nicholas commented on the recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East, stating that «the salvific season of Lent exists for peacemaking, not for fighting.» His Eminence emphasized that in these holy days of Lent it is necessary to enter «through the gates of Forgiveness Sunday,» since it is a time of reconciliation.
Vladyka Nicholas emphasized that Lent is a time when one is called to self-examination and penitential prayer, not to focus on others. He also noted that the current turmoil and divisions are troubling, but they do not frighten the Church.
«We must observe fasting, repent of our sins, pray for those who are suffering, support our Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem, which is in danger, and try to abide in the love of Christ, thus mitigating the violent spirit of this time, » Metropolitan Nicholas said.
Recall, earlier we reported that against the backdrop of Israeli-American airstrikes on targets in Iran and subsequent retaliatory measures, Israel imposed strict restrictions on public gatherings. This led to the closure of schools, businesses, airports, as well as churches, mosques and synagogues. These measures have been felt particularly acutely by Muslims celebrating Ramadan and Jews preparing for Purim, causing deep frustration and anxiety among the faithful. The Old City of Jerusalem, home to shrines of the three Abrahamic religions, was also closed to the public.
