Escalation in the Aegean Sea: international analysts warn of a new round of Greek-Turkish crisis

Relations between Greece and Turkey have once again entered a phase of dangerous tension after the harsh statements of the Turkish military leadership. International experts note the systematic escalation of the situation in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, associated with Ankara’s attempts to challenge the status of the Greek islands and promote its geopolitical doctrine.
According to the Greek edition of Vima Orthodoxias, the reason for another escalation was the provocative statements of Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler. He again raised the issue of demilitarization of the Greek islands and the creation of “fait accompli” in the region. The Greek Ministry of National Defense responded immediately, saying that Athens exercises its sovereign rights in full compliance with international law and has sufficient power to deter any threats.
German analyst Klaus Reinhardt stressed in an interview with Vima Orthodoxias that Ankara is increasing pressure to block energy and defense initiatives of the alliance of Greece, Cyprus and Israel. French expert Marie Dubois added that the European Union is watching the situation with alarm, noting that the close military cooperation between Athens and Paris is particularly irritating for the Turkish leadership. At the same time, American political scientist Michael Rubin believes that Turkey is trying to “test the limits of the West’s patience” without bringing the situation to a complete breakdown of relations.
There are counter accusations from the Turkish side. Geostrategist Mesut Hakki Kashin argues that Turkey is protecting its interests from Greece’s “maximalist demands.” Turkey’s new Maritime Zones Bill is expected to expand Ankara’s powers under the Blue Homeland concept, which could become a legal tool for further expansion in the region.
Greek experts such as Konstantinos Grivas have urged the government to remain as vigilant as possible. According to diplomatic sources, the coming months will be critical for security in the region, as Turkey may attempt to provoke a new crisis to achieve its political goals before the stabilization of regional energy alliances.
