In Ukraine, it would take eight births per woman to restore the 2022 demographic indicators

Dmitry Govseev, director of the Kyiv Perinatal Center, issued a statement regarding the critical demographic situation in the country. According to him, in order to restore the population to its 2022 level, every woman would need to give birth to eight children—a scenario the expert himself acknowledges is unrealistic. Govseev emphasized that the country’s demographic potential has been seriously undermined, and one of the key factors for its recovery should be the return of citizens who left the country after the start of the full-scale war. Nevertheless, the doctor expressed skepticism regarding a mass return of young people, which could help improve demographic indicators in the future.

The article also notes a sharp decline in the birth rate in the capital: while Kyiv’s public healthcare facilities previously recorded up to 33,000 births annually, projections for 2025–2026 are limited to 20,000. The expert is convinced that government cash payments alone are not enough to stimulate the birth rate. The main criteria for Ukrainian women when deciding to have a child remain safety, the availability of jobs, and overall social stability.

As a reminder, we previously reported that after the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Ukraine will face a number of serious social challenges, one of which is a demographic crisis. Statistics indicate that the majority of Ukrainians who have left the country over the past three years do not want to return.
