Hierarchs of the Church of Greece have spoken out about the crisis caused by a shortage of Orthodox clergy in Greece

The Greek Orthodox Church is facing a serious shortage of priests, particularly in remote mountainous areas, on the islands, and in border regions. Metropolitan Jerome of Kalavryta and Metropolitan George of Karpenisi expressed deep concern over the situation, calling on parishes to serve as living examples and sources of inspiration for young people. This was reported by Vima Orthodoxias.

To address this problem, Archbishop Jerome actively supports initiatives to attract young candidates to the priesthood. A key step in this direction has been the establishment of special apprenticeship schools for candidates for the priesthood. The hierarchs also called on the government to pay attention to the Church’s current staffing needs.

In addition to the official reception at the cathedral, a working meeting took place between Metropolitan Nektarios and Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations (DECR). During the conversation, Metropolitan Anthony thanked the Greek guest for providing Russian believers with the opportunity to venerate one of the most revered Christian relics, which is usually kept on the island of Corfu.
