Religious holidays remain the most popular in Ukraine: KMIS survey results

Religious celebrations continue to occupy leading positions in the preferences of Ukrainian citizens, significantly outstripping traditional secular holidays. According to the results of a fresh sociological survey, Easter and Christmas are recognized as the most important dates for the majority of the country’s population.

As UA.news reports with reference to the data of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KMIS), Easter (67%) and Christmas (66%) remain the most popular holidays. These indicators show stability over the last years, emphasizing the fundamental role of religion in the modern cultural life of Ukrainians.

State holidays that symbolize national identity also received significant support from the population. Independence Day of Ukraine was named as the favorite holiday by 54% of respondents, and the Day of Defenders and Protectors of Ukraine – by 53%. The high positions of these dates testify to the growth of patriotism and deep respect for servicemen who defend the sovereignty of the state in the conditions of armed aggression.

At the same time the popularity of the New Year has undergone significant changes: if earlier it was celebrated by about 80% of respondents, now this figure has decreased to 40%. Constitution Day (28%), Trinity Day (27%) and International Women’s Day (24%) are at the bottom of the rating. Victory Day (11%) and Labor Day (5%) are the least popular, which indicates a revision of the attitude to the holidays of the Soviet period.
