IDF soldiers vandalized yet another Christian village in Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Command has initiated an investigation into a group of soldiers following the emergence of video footage depicting the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure and solar panels in the Christian village of Debel in southern Lebanon. The incident has increased international attention to the actions of Israeli troops in the region and has drawn sharp criticism from the country’s leadership.

According to Christian Today, video footage circulating online shows military vehicles and excavators destroying solar installations on the outskirts of the village. In addition to energy equipment, critical infrastructure such as water systems, residential homes, roads and olive groves were damaged during the operation, according to local residents. An IDF spokesperson said that the behavior captured on the video «does not reflect the values of the army,» and promised to take disciplinary action if the soldiers were proven guilty.

The incident was the second case of misconduct at Debel in recent times. Earlier, a video of a soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ with a sledgehammer caused widespread outcry. According to Christian Today, the act was directly criticized by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The perpetrators of the desecration of the religious symbol have already been identified: they received 30-day prison sentences and were suspended from combat duty. The statue itself has been replaced with a new one provided by the Italian contingent of the UN peacekeeping mission.

The village of Debel, located between the border with Israel and the Litani River, is a predominantly Christian community. Unlike many other border areas, its residents were not initially ordered to evacuate when the security zone was established. Nevertheless, the increasing incidents of vandalism cause experts to fear that the actions of certain units may be motivated by religious motives and not only by the tasks of ensuring national security.

Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officially confirmed the damage to the Christian temple in the village of Yarun in southern Lebanon during the recent hostilities. This incident provoked an international outcry and sharp criticism from Catholic organizations, which accused the military of deliberately destroying the Christian monastery.
