A memorial service was held in Paris to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Simon Petliura with the participation of the hierarchs of Constantinople and the UGCC

The capital of France hosted solemn events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the death of the head of the UPR Directorate, Symon Petliura. High-ranking officials of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), as well as Ukrainian diplomats and military personnel, took part in the memorial services at his grave.

According to the UGCC website, the events took place on May 25, 2026, in Paris. The head of the Paris Eparchy of the UGCC, Ihor Rantsa, together with the clergy, held a memorial service at the burial site of the statesman. The commemorative events were joined by Archbishop Daniel (Zelinsky) of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, who described Simon Petliura as a «patriot and defender of the freedom and dignity of Ukraine» on his social media.

The service was attended by officials, including Ukraine’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France Vadym Omelchenko. In addition, the ceremony was attended by soldiers from the 152nd Separate Brigade named after Simon Petliura and the Da Vinci Wolves unit. Despite the fact that the hierarchs of different denominations stood next to each other in liturgical vestments, the details of their joint prayer were not specified.

As reported, the OCU suggested the possibility of future unification with the UGCC, but emphasized that this process directly depends on reaching agreements between the Vatican and the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Representatives of both denominations expressed «cautious optimism» about the timing of the rapprochement, noting that a high-level dialogue is already underway.
