A fire broke out at the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra following a missile attack on Kyiv

On the night of June 15, 2026, a fire broke out at the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra following a missile and drone attack by Russian forces on the city of Kyiv. Significant damage was reported on the monastery grounds: the roof of the Cathedral of the Dormition caught fire. Cleanup efforts are ongoing at the site, with rescue workers, city services, and heavy equipment on the scene. At the same time, an emergency evacuation of sacred relics and liturgical items was organized.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the damage on the Lavra’s grounds is substantial. Based on preliminary reports, the fire engulfed approximately 800 square meters of the roof of the Assumption Cathedral. Currently, work is ongoing on the grounds of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to extinguish the fires and address the aftermath of the incident. Units of the State Emergency Service, necessary municipal services, and specialized equipment have been deployed to manage the situation.

It is noted separately that thanks to the actions of the monastic community, the clergy, Lavra staff, and emergency services, an urgent evacuation of sacred relics and liturgical items was organized during the fire. Among them are ancient icons, antiminsia, and other relics of ecclesiastical, national, and universal value.
