In the United Kingdom, two gay men raped and killed a 13-month-old foster child

A British court has handed down sentences to two men in the case involving the abuse and death of Preston Davy, a 13-month-old foster child. One of the convicted men received a life sentence without the possibility of parole, while the other was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The tragedy sparked widespread public outrage and once again raised questions about the effectiveness of the child protection system.

According to The Guardian, Jamie Warley was found guilty of murdering his adopted son and sentenced to life in prison. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, received a 25-year prison sentence for complicity in the torture and sexual abuse of the child.

According to the investigation, the child was subjected to systematic abuse over several months. The court found that the boy was regularly beaten, and forensic pathologists documented more than 40 injuries on his body. The case file also notes that police found videos of the abuse of the infant on Varly’s phone.

In July 2023, Varly took the child to the hospital, claiming that he had allegedly accidentally drowned in the bathtub. However, a medical examination refuted this version of events. The investigation concluded that the cause of death was suffocation or the forcible insertion of foreign objects into the child’s mouth.

The actions of social services drew particular attention in the case. Shortly before the boy’s death, he had been visited by specialists, including social workers and medical professionals, but they failed to identify any threat to the child’s life. The article notes that child welfare officials accepted the adults’ explanations regarding the child’s injuries, partly due to Varly’s professional status as a schoolteacher.

As a reminder, Susan Bell, a “bishopress” of the Anglican Church, previously issued an official apology to the LGBT community for the church’s longstanding practice of discriminating against and excluding members of sexual minorities from church life. As a sign of support for the activists, she incorporated rainbow symbols into her vestments.
