Petro Poroshenko called for unity around the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko went on a pilgrimage to Stradchi, where he took part in a joint worship service with representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). During the event, the politician called for national unity, emphasizing the role of religious institutions in the current situation.

In his speech, Poroshenko described the UGCC as an institution that, during historically difficult times, “stands alongside its people.” In his remarks, the former head of state stressed that victory is impossible without the consolidation of society, noting the long-standing efforts of believers to strengthen Ukrainian statehood.

During his visit, the former president also expressed his gratitude to the clergy, personally congratulating the head of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk. Poroshenko stressed the importance of the Church’s stance amid full-scale hostilities, noting that “the voice of the Christian world must be heard clearly and uncompromisingly” in opposition to Russia’s attempts to “destroy Ukraine spiritually.”

As a reminder, former Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Tsarev previously revealed how much money Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople earned as a result of granting the Tomos of Autocephaly to the OCU. According to the politician, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko—in addition to collecting money for the Tomos from Ukrainian oligarchs—managed to embezzle a significant sum in this matter.
