Global Statistics: Abortions Became the Leading Cause of Death in 2025

According to data from Worldometers, a global data monitoring platform that relies on statistical models from the World Health Organization, more than 73 million abortions were performed worldwide in 2025. This figure made abortion the leading cause of death worldwide, far surpassing factors such as cancer, infections, and smoking.

According to the Christian Daily, the total number of deaths from all causes in 2025 was approximately 140 million, with abortions accounting for nearly 52% of that total. By comparison, cancer caused 10 million deaths, and infectious diseases caused 17 million.

The statistics include both legal and illegal abortion procedures. The rise in these figures is attributed to population growth, increased access to medical abortion methods, and improvements in data collection systems. In the United States, despite a decline in the overall abortion rate over the past decade, between 1,500 and 2,500 such procedures are performed daily.

In response to these figures, supporters of the “pro-life” movement emphasize the biological significance of fetal development in the womb. Washington, D.C., hosts the annual “March for Life,” timed to coincide with the anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, which was overturned in 2022. The event aims to draw public attention to the issue of protecting the rights of unborn children.
