Former Metropolitan Tichik of Paphos refused to appear before the Synod of the Cypriot Orthodox Church

On October 27, 2026, an extraordinary meeting of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus was held, chaired by Archbishop George of Cyprus. The key topics of the meeting were internal administrative matters and the international agenda.

According to the Orthodoxia News Agency, the meeting addressed the situation surrounding former Metropolitan Tychikos of Paphos, who failed to appear before the Synod, citing various reasons. The highest ecclesiastical authority granted the former hierarch’s request for a personal meeting with Archbishop George to discuss the situation. It is expected that following this conversation, he will ultimately provide an explanation to the Synod and also meet with the current Metropolitan of Paphos, Gregory.

As a reminder, it was previously reported that a tense situation had arisen within the Cypriot Orthodox Church, triggered by reports of attempts to establish an alternative church structure and to hold unauthorized divine services in private homes.
