Another church in Cherkasy region to be taken away from Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The Smelyansky District Prosecutor’s Office of Cherkasy region has announced another expropriation of a church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the region. This time, it is the St. Michael’s Church of the Cherkasy Diocese of the UOC in Horodyshche, built in 1844, which is an architectural monument of national importance. The religious building, built in the Neo-Gothic style by Italian architect Giorgio Torricelli, is notable for its resemblance to a church. Inside, a unique nineteenth-century painting “The Last Judgment” has been preserved, which covers more than 100 square meters. This was reported by the Cherkasy Information Platform website.

According to the publication, prosecutors found that in May 2018, the right of private ownership of St. Michael’s Church of the UOC was registered for the religious community of St. Michael’s Parish of the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on the basis of a decision of the executive committee of the local council of 1989. However, this decision did not contain any instructions to transfer the monument to the ownership of a religious organization. The Economic Court of the Cherkasy region has already opened proceedings in the case at the request of the prosecutor. The trial has been scheduled.

We will remind, earlier we reported that the ancient Uspensky (St. George) Cathedral of the XІІ century of the city of Kanev, previously expropriated by the state from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, stands closed since April 2024. The state administration reported that the temple may become part of the Shevchenko National Reserve.
