Estonian Orthodox Church officially registers new name

The press service of the Estonian Orthodox Church has officially registered the new name. On March 31, 2025, the registration department of the Tartu District Court approved the new name of our Church — the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (Eesti Kristlik Õigeusu Kirik), as well as changes to the charter. This is reported by the official website of the Estonian Orthodox Church.

«The new name emphasizes our mission to serve all Estonian residents, preserving the centuries-old traditions of Orthodoxy in Estonia in a continuous and uninterrupted manner. We strive to be an open and integral part of Estonian society. All parishes will continue to operate as usual. These changes do not affect the canonical structure of our Church, and the clergy will continue to perform services and provide spiritual support to the parishioners. In the near future, work will be done to update the name of the Church on the official website, information stands and documents,» — the press service of the Church reported.

It should be recalled that on March 26, 2025, amendments to Estonia’s Law on Churches and Parishes, aimed at restricting the activities of the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (formerly EOC MP), passed their second reading in the country’s Parliament. The final discussion of the amendments and the third reading are scheduled in the Riigikogu on April 9.
