Vatican Invites Transgender People, Migrants, and Prisoners to Participate in the Funeral Ceremony of Pope Francis

On April 26, 2025, a farewell ceremony for Pope Francis will be held at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, with participants from socially vulnerable groups. Around 40 individuals from transgender, migrant, and prisoner communities will be invited to the Pope’s funeral ceremony, which will take place at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, as reported by the official Vatican News website.

During the ceremony, transgender individuals will stand on the steps of the basilica holding white roses. This will be part of a symbolic gesture in honor of the Pontiff, who was known for his support of vulnerable members of society.

Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, Benoni Ambarus, expressed his admiration for this decision, calling it a «sensitive choice,» symbolizing Pope Francis’ care for the most vulnerable members of society. He noted that Pope Francis, whom he loved deeply, would be surrounded by his beloved children during his final moments on Earth.

Bishop Ambarus also clarified that the group of transgender individuals participating in the ceremony is part of a small Catholic community of nuns who provide spiritual support to transgender people.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska will also participate in the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis.
