Security Forces Storm the Residence of Catholicos Karekin II in Etchmiadzin

On June 27, officers of Armenia’s National Security Service entered the grounds of Etchmiadzin, where a meeting of clergy was taking place under the leadership of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II. The target of the operation was Archbishop Mikael Ajapayan of the Shirak Diocese, who had previously been accused of allegedly preparing a terrorist attack and attempting a coup. This was reported by the Armenian news portal 7or.am.
The security forces tried to detain the archbishop directly within the patriarchal residence but encountered resistance from both clergy and laypeople. According to reports, Ajapayan’s health deteriorated during the confrontation due to pressure from the special services.
Protesters blocked access to the building, preventing the arrest from taking place. Security agents broke a window at the guard post and entered the premises, but under pressure from the gathered crowd were forced to retreat. Ajapayan stated that he was ready to voluntarily undergo all necessary legal procedures.
Catholicos Karekin II announced that the archbishop would go for questioning accompanied by a lawyer, while the clergy would convene a Synod to determine their position. At the same time, access to the city of Etchmiadzin has been effectively blocked, and citizens have been receiving warnings not to approach the area.
Despite the roadblocks, believers continue to arrive in Etchmiadzin. “We will not abandon the Church,” say the faithful. According to lawyer and public figure Migran Poghosyan, the authorities are attempting to isolate the clergy from public support.
As a reminder, law enforcement sources in Armenia report that the Investigative Committee has filed charges against Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, leader of the opposition movement «Sacred Struggle.» He is accused of allegedly attempting a terrorist act aimed at seizing power.
