Maia Sandu added the Church to the list of “external threats” to Moldova's security

On July 30, 2025, during a press conference, Moldovan President Maia Sandu listed external threats to the country, which, in her opinion, come from Russia. Among other things, Sandu mentioned the Church, without specifying which denomination she was referring to. This was reported by NewsMaker.
According to Sandu, “Russia is preparing unprecedented interference in the parliamentary elections scheduled for September.” The head of state notes that the list of ways to influence Moldovan society will also include “using the church in the interests of a foreign state.”
Earlier, Moldovan politician and leader of the opposition bloc “Victory” Ilan Shor said that Sandu’s government was ready to ban the Orthodox Church of Moldova immediately after Ukraine passed a law banning the UOC. However, given the upcoming presidential elections and the public outcry caused by the issue of banning the UOC, Sandu was afraid to follow in the footsteps of her Ukrainian colleagues.
