The Synod of the Jerusalem Patriarchate has removed the Archbishop of Sinai from his position

On September 8, 2025, the Holy Synod of the Jerusalem Patriarchate removed Archbishop Damian of Sinai, the former abbot of the Sinai Monastery, from his position. This decision was made amid a scandal surrounding the Sinai Monastery of St. Catherine that had been ongoing for several months. It is noteworthy that Archbishop Damian himself, who had previously been summoned to the Synod, ignored the meeting. This was reported by the press service of the Jerusalem Patriarchate.
«The Holy and Sacred Synod, taking into account the decision of the Sinai brotherhood of July 30 of this year on his removal from the abbacy, as well as the official petition of July 31, based on the canonical offenses he committed, unanimously decided to remove him from the throne of Archbishop of Sinai, Faran, and Raito, determining that from now on his position will be called “former Archbishop of Sinai, Faran, and Raito”», — the statement said.
Earlier, it was reported that the abbot of the Sinai Monastery, Archbishop Damian, who recently left Egypt for Greece, announced that he would officially resign on September 12. At the same time, elections for the new abbot of the monastery in Sinai are scheduled for September 14, 2025.
