The Sinai Monastery has elected a new abbot

On September 14, 2025, elections for the new abbot of the monastery were held at the Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai. Archimandrite Simeon Papadopoulos, head of the Sinai Metochion in Alepochori, became the new abbot. This was reported by The Orthodox Times.

It is reported that the election took place without any disputes regarding the procedure. Both sides of the Brotherhood reached an agreement, as a result of which 19 out of 20 votes were cast for the candidate, who himself voted with a blank ballot in accordance with ancient custom.

The decision of the General Assembly will be communicated to the Jerusalem Patriarchate, after which the process of ordaining the new abbot and archbishop of Sinai will begin.

We previously reported that on September 12, 2025, the abbot of the Sinai Monastery of St. Catherine, Archbishop Damian, officially resigned from his position as abbot. The 92-year-old bishop submitted his resignation to the Synod of the Jerusalem Patriarchate in writing.
