Conflict of interest: Pope Leo XIV and the Trump administration deepen differences

Pope Leo XIV, the first American in office, has found himself on a collision course with US President Donald Trump. The latest rift between the Vatican and the White House came after Trump’s comments about Venezuela, to which the pontiff responded by calling for the defense of the country’s sovereignty, indicating deepening ideological differences on a number of key issues.
According to Politico, another fault line between the Vatican and the White House emerged on Sunday. Shortly after Trump suggested that his administration could “govern” Venezuela, Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native, delivered an address from the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St. Peter’s Square. In his address, the pontiff called for ensuring the country’s “sovereignty,” which was seen as a direct response to the U.S. leader’s remarks.
For conservatives who support the MAGA movement, this is part of an undesirable pattern. While Leo XIV’s tone toward Trump is less aggressive than that of his predecessor Francis, his priorities are reigniting familiar culture wars with the U.S. administration. Topics such as immigration and deportations, the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and climate change remain major stumbling points, underscoring the profound worldview differences between the pontiff and the White House.
As a reminder, Pope Leo XIV recently held talks with Vladimir Zelensky, which centered on achieving peace in the Russian-Ukrainian war. During an impromptu press conference at Castel Gandolfo, the pontiff also touched on the topics of future European security, peace initiatives and expressed cautious optimism about a possible visit to Kiev, while voicing concern about certain aspects of US President Donald Trump’s plans.
