Italy officially recognized the status of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese

The Italian Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved a bill regulating relations between the state and the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Italy, marking the official recognition of its status. This decision emphasizes the significant spiritual and social contribution of the Romanian community, which is the largest foreign diaspora in the country. The bill is awaiting final approval in the Senate of the Republic. This is reported by the press service of the Romanian Patriarchate.
The bill No. 2396, passed by the Chamber of Deputies, was supported by 268 votes and is an important step towards consolidating the legal status of the diocese. The Romanian Orthodox Diocese noted that this recognition was the result of more than 50 years of missionary activity and selfless service of the clergy and parishioners, who have been under the leadership of Bishop Siluan since 2008.
Romanian Ambassador to Italy Gabriela Dankeu characterized the vote as a manifestation of the democratic maturity of the Italian state and an important step to strengthen the special relations between the two countries. It is expected that after the vote in the Senate of the Republic, the law will finally enter into force, formalizing the legal status of the diocese.
Recall that on Sunday, October 26, 2025, the consecration of the National Cathedral (Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation), the largest Orthodox church in the world, took place in the capital of Romania. The ceremony was attended by thousands of pilgrims and the country’s top officials. The service was led by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
