Serbian Patriarch Porfiri called on world leaders to intervene immediately to protect Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija

Serbian Patriarch Porfiry appealed to the leaders of world powers and heads of international organizations to intervene immediately to protect the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija, warning of the risk of the final displacement of Orthodox Christians from the region amid the new discriminatory policies of the Pristina authorities.

According to Orthodoxia.info, the First Hierarch sent letters to the Pope, the presidents of Russia and the United States, and European leaders. Separately, the letters were addressed to French President Emmanuel Macron and the prime ministers of Italy, Great Britain and Germany, along with UN Secretary General António Guterres and the Director-General of UNESCO.

In the messages, Porfirije emphasizes that the implementation of new discriminatory legislation against foreigners, initiated by the Pristina authorities, directly jeopardizes the functioning of the University of Kosovska Mitrovica, as well as primary and secondary schools where Serbian children are educated. The violation of the right to education, in his assessment, undermines the foundations of community life and its future.

The Patriarch also expresses grave concern about the fate of the health care system, which provides medical care to Serbs in the region. He warns that the deprivation of the right to education and access to treatment could lead to a mass exodus of the population from its historical hearths.

The historical significance of the Serbian presence in this Christian land is emphasized: there are some 1,300 Orthodox churches and monasteries in Kosovo, of which four are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and, according to the source, are in constant danger.

Concluding his appeals to the UN Secretary General and the head of UNESCO, Porfiry noted that the search for a peaceful and compromise solution remains a priority. Emphasizing that human life is the supreme sacredness, he called on the international community to use its authority to prevent the destruction of Serbian institutions and to ensure the preservation of the people and their religious sanctuaries.
