Patriarch of the Coptic Church Tawadros II made an official visit to the Patriarchate of Constantinople

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, Pope and Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church Tawadros II arrived on an official visit to the seat of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Constantinople (Phanar). According to Orthodox Times, the visit is aimed at strengthening inter-church relations and dialog between Orthodox traditions.
The delegation’s arrival at the Phanar was accompanied by festive bell ringing. At the main gate, the distinguished guest was greeted by representatives of the patriarchal clergy headed by Metropolitan Gregory of Ankara. In the narthex of the Patriarchal Church Tavadros II was met by Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon, chairman of the Synodal Commission for Inter-Christian and Interreligious Dialogue, who performed a solemn Doxology in honor of the Primate’s visit.
After the conclusion of the service, an official meeting took place in the Throne Room, where Tawadros II was solemnly received by Patriarch Bartholomew. The Primate exchanged warm greetings in the presence of the hierarchs of the See and members of the Coptic delegation, after which they had a brief private conversation in the Patriarch’s office.
Patriarch Tawadros II is accompanied on the trip by Metropolitan Thomas of Kusia and Myra, Metropolitan Daniel of Maadi, Bishop Angelos, and officials including Egyptian Ambassador to Turkey Wael Badawi and Consul General Hatim Elalfi.
As a reminder, on March 7, 2024, the synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church passed a resolution to suspend communion with the Roman Catholic Church due to the adoption of the latest declaration “Fiducia supplicans,” which allows for the “blessing” of LGBT couples. The Coptic Church believes that any “blessing” for same-sex relationships is a “blessing” for sin.
