In Nigeria, Islamists brutally murdered kidnapped Catholics

Tragic events in Kaduna State, Nigeria, have led to the confirmation of the deaths of five hostages from the Christian community who had previously been taken captive by militants. According to Fides, among the dead was Victor Paul, a church mentor and catechist.
According to reports, Victor Paul was abducted on February 9 during a massive attack by extremists on the villages of Kutaho and Kugur. His pregnant wife, young son, and about 30 local residents were also taken captive. The Archdiocese of Kaduna confirmed that the hostages were subjected to brutal torture and starvation, and that the catechist’s son was killed by militants while in captivity.
Although some of the captives managed to return home—11 people were released in April, and subsequent groups of hostages were rescued in May and June—the Church continues to mourn those who died. “The Church thanks God for the release of the survivors but mourns those who did not return alive,” emphasized representatives of the diocese. At this time, the Kaduna state government and law enforcement agencies have not provided any official comments regarding the circumstances of the deaths.
