Conflict in Kyiv: Residents Tear Down Fence at UGCC Church Construction Site

Residents of the Obolon district of Kyiv dismantled a fence at a construction site designated for the construction of a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on Severna Street. This incident marked the latest chapter in a long-standing conflict between local residents and representatives of the religious community.

It is reported that the conflict over the plot of land in Obolon has been ongoing for several months now. While representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church assert the legality of their actions, citing a decision by the Kyiv City Council to transfer the land for permanent use, an initiative group of local residents insists that the project is illegal. Protesters have already collected signatures on a petition demanding that construction be halted.

The situation has escalated despite attempts to resolve the dispute. According to statements from the parish, on July 23, 2026, the parties reached a compromise: the developer agreed to suspend work until a meeting was held at the district state administration, and the activists promised to refrain from using force. However, contrary to the agreements reached, the site’s fencing was demolished on July 27. As of now, no official comments regarding the incident have been received from law enforcement agencies or the city administration.

As a reminder, we previously reported that in Kyiv’s Obolon district , preparatory work for the construction of a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) had resumed, despite active opposition from the local community. A new fence has already been installed at the construction site on Severna Street, and a project description has been posted, according to which completion of the work is scheduled for the end of 2027.
