Construction of a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Kyiv has resumed despite protests by local residents

In Kyiv’s Obolon District, preparatory work for the construction of a church of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) has resumed, despite strong opposition from the local community. A new fence has already been erected at the construction site on Severna Street, and a project information sign has been posted, indicating that completion is scheduled for the end of 2027. This was reported by the Telegram channel Obolonlife .

The situation surrounding the construction remains tense: in 2024, a petition by Obolon residents opposing the development of the park gathered the required 6,000 signatures; however, construction began before the dispute was finally resolved in court. Currently, the Kyiv District Administrative Court is continuing to hear a lawsuit filed by the civic organization “Voice of Obolon,” which is seeking to overturn the Kyiv City Council’s decision to transfer the land plot to the religious community.

According to the publication, following a meeting with city officials, including Kyiv City Council member Yevhen Kuzmenko, the parties reached a preliminary agreement to hold public hearings. Until these hearings are completed, the developer has pledged to refrain from active construction work. A poll conducted on the Obolonlife Telegram channel confirmed a high level of dissatisfaction among local residents: the overwhelming majority of participants opposed the construction of a church in close proximity to residential buildings and social facilities.
